At this time we need each other more than ever. A lot of places are opening their restrictions and some people are playing it on the cautious side by staying in their homes. There are protests happening globally, calling for change in our communities around racial profiling, and killing of Black bodies. This is a crazy time to be alive, with everything going on, I am just learning to take it a day at a time, hour by hour, and minute by minute. While I am at home I can get caught up in a whirlwind of emotions, and that’s understandable because I am human. I feel things. The issue is when I am not able to process them and I keep them bottled up. We need to express ourselves, whether that is through writing, singing, dancing, motivating, drawing, etc. The virtual open mic spaces have been a safe haven for me.
A few weeks ago I was on a beautiful zoom “Work in progress writers workshop” hosted by Amanda Shea. It was a beautiful open mic that helped creators flesh through and give space to songs, poetry, beats that were unfinished. I liked this space because it gave me a chance to get out of my comfort zone. I have been on a lot of open mics and they have been refreshing to see how people are processing these times and this moment in history. I may not have participated in all of them but I resonated with a lot of the local Boston artists who got on the zoom mics and the instagram mics.
Truth is we need spaces to air our grievances. We need a place to feel like we can talk about the things that are challenging us, and that are making us sad. Truth is we need the work of other people to inspire us, to challenge our perceptions, to confirm and validate how we’ve been thinking. Truth is we need each other. That’s why I am grateful for these spaces.
So if you all are not apart of spaces like ” If you can feel it, you can speak it”, “Works in Progress”, or ” The Black Cotton club” definitely get connected. I highly recommend it! Also feel free to create your own virtual Open Mic spaces if you haven’t found what you’re looking for. In my 7 day self love challenge I talk about emotional self care/ self love. Emotional Self care/love is doing activities that help you connect, process, and reflect on a full range of emotions. Emotional self-care is caring for your emotional needs by identifying what it is you’re feeling and then moving forward in a way that honors yourself and those emotions. Practicing self-care takes various forms. Please take the time to find out how you best process your trauma. There is a lot going on right now and I want you to be okay. Please reach out to a mentor, councilor, mental health professional, or a hotline if you need to talk to someone.
