Building a Black Empowerment Brand with Sandra Hamiliton

About Sandra Hamilton:

Sandra Hamilton was feeling depressed after her 3rd car accident. She became obsessed with thinking of the meaning of life. A few months in, she picked up her tablet and started drawing. Drawing made her start feeling more purposeful–so when she began to draw designs, that spoke to her, and for her, she envisioned those designs being on clothes—being on her! The inspiring designs would never be found in a Canadian store, so she thought of making her designs available to the Black community and Allies. Sandra wanted everyone around the globe to have access to her empowering streetwear, so she opened SDHtoronto, an online store with designs that speak to you and for you. You can see her most popular, “Black Intelligence” viral design on Keedron Bryant, as he sings the soulful, “I Just Wanna Live” on her website SDHtoronto.com/blackintelligenceofficial.com

Summary:

Racial discrimination is one of the problems prevalent in the world and occur on a daily basis. Being treated differently because of skin color, race and ethnicity is morally wrong. It’s currently happening, and it will continue to happen in the future if we do not step up and act against it. 

For Sandra, she found a way on how she can help support and contribute to the community by building a brand that empowers Black people. It all started when she looked for something that represents what she wants to wear in her area but found nothing. So, she created one for herself and now, she’s making it for other people who believes in what she’s also fighting for – Black empowerment.

In this episode, I had the chance to talk to Sandra and share her humble beginnings and how a social media post from a kid who promoted her clothing became viral and known by lots of people. She also talked through building an empowerment brand and how one can support and fight racism.
