I pray for the family of George Floyd and all those impacted by senseless murder and terrorism. Yes, we are tired of seeing all of this happen to our people. Yes, we are fed up. Yes, we are protesting in the streets, and on social media. We are consuming a lot of media, we are feeling a lot of emotions. There are moments of triumph, and heartbreaking moments of despair. How do we cope?
We as advocates do the work, especially as women, we do the work but we carry the work in our bodies. So here are 3 tips to practicing radical self care during this time. 1)Take a Break. You are absolutely allowed to give yourself a moment. Right now, sit back in your seat, head up, chest out. and release your shoulders. Take deep Breaths, count to three in your mind with each inhale and exhale. In hale through your nose and out through your mouth. Close your eyes if you need to. Take a moment. You deserve it. You deserve it. Yes you do, you absolutely deserve it. Do this for 3-5 minutes, and time yourself if you need to. 2) Feel everything then hold onto hope. Allow yourself to work through your emotions without judgement. Everything you are going through is valid. At the beginning of the week I was confused as to why people are looting, is it self serving verses purpose driven. I allowed myself to feel that. I allowed myself to feel angry that all of this is happening, AGAIN. It feels like dejavu. It hurts. I cried, I celebrated to see all of my people on the Boston streets organizing. I cried again. All of it is okay. Your feelings are valid. All of your feelings are VALID. Honor them. Then actively look for the Good. What things are giving you hope? Yes, feel everything but don’t allow yourself to live in despair. End your day writing or talking to an uplifting person, watch a Lisa Nichols video, do something that will help to restore your hope in humanity. Think about what is truly bringing you joy, for me hope is having a blogsite where I can express how I feel. I also appreciate having a community of people who are actively taking the self love challenge and are actively telling me how it’s helping them. You all give me hope and I thank you for that. You must define what hope looks like to you and a great way to do that is to start a gratitude list. what are the things you are grateful for? 3)Stay hydrated. This one is super practical. Drink water. Are you getting enough clean filtered water? Are you eating enough green veges created by mama earth? In order to take care of others, like we as women like to do, we are natural nuturers, so we have to remember to eat healthy greens to refuel our bodies and drink plenty of water. For example if you had a car and you kept using it, driving it everywhere, and then you saw the gas tank on E what would you do? It’s a no brainer you would go to the gas station and give it the stuff it needs, gas, oil change, maybe even a nice car wash. Im not saying your body is a car but it is your vehicle in this life. Please take care of it so it can take care of you. Love you all lots! Please stay in love light and positive energy! If you are looking to join another round of the self love challenge let me know. We are doing another round June 8th.
